Zechariah 12:10-13:1. “Look on me, on him they have pierced!”
Recap:
Form last time, God was going to protect the inhabitance of Jerusalem, and they would all become strong the weakest like David, and the house of David like the angle of the Lord. God would destroy all the nations that would come against Jerusalem. (All that rejected Jesus will be broken on that stone).
We continue in verse 10, God will pour out his spirt (Holy Spirt) of grace and pleas for mercy, on the house of David, and the people living in Jerusalem. But the spirt will make them morn and weep. The spirt will make them see open their eyes:
The spirt will let them see: “When they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, so the spirt makes is possible to see, and to morn, in great sorrow and they will morn for him as for an only child and weep bitterly over him as if the lost their firstborn.
Why morn? This amazing passage raised questions: They have pierced God? How did they do that?
Why is this grace and mercy? God the Holy Spirt letting the people see…
The 3-1 – pierced me, him, - that God say it is me, and them him, That God, then Jesus, showing that Jesus is God, this seems like a place the 3-1 interact in the story. And how intermit God and Jesus are, as they act together, and God the Spirt has opened the eyes of the people to see. The 3-1 God is working in all people that will see, - Spirt job – righteousness, judgment open eyes to see God, make people able to repent.
The mourning – because of their sin, idol worship, unfaithfulness, commentators would say was like hurting God, piercing God, realizing that by the spirt they morn, a lot.
On that day, it will be like the mourning of Megido, - the last good kings death Joshia, hope was now gone for Juda, only one more evil king and then exile.
They morn family by family men and women separate – could show, sexual abstinence in the morning.
Davids house, and now his other son in mentioned Nathan PPT and PPT the Levites and the Shimeites they will all morn.
But on that day, a fountain will be open for the house of David and the inhabitance of Jerusalem, - not just any fountain, that fountain will cleanse then from sin and uncleanness. Wash away separation from God, take away sin, wow. That is good news. Cleansing form sin, made clan, restored to right relationship with God. What a great day. What great hope. What a great invitation, to come to God.
Now for the people on Zechariah’s time this was a great encouragement or just confusing, I did not hurt God, by my rebellion and sin, or I did and I can turn/repent and morn. And look to God to provide a fountain of cleansing. It is the same today, ether we see our sin and wrong doing, rebellion, against God, and turn or we don’t.
For some of us, we might sit up, we might draw closer to the text because this might sound like something, we have head before. John is not in doubt; he writes in his Gospel: PPT John let his readers know that this is talking about Jesus, and that this was fulfilled in Jesus’ piercing on the cross. PPT John, 34-37. Jesus is the fountain, that can cleanse and take away sin.
John makes one more refence to the passage in Zech In revelation and to what he wrote in in gospel, John explain that all will see Jesus, when he comes back PPT Revelation 1: 7-8. John is not in doubt.
Form Zachariah God saying that God will be pierced, and people will see it, morn weep, but God used the evil of man the killing of Jesus, to bring cleansing of sin and uncleanness.
But as we said last time Jesus gave up his life and Jesus is the fountain, that brings the cleansing from sin and uncleanness, the spirt opens people’s eyes to see Jesus, opens people eyes to see sin and to be able to morn, repent at turn to God.
When we morn why do we morn?
Do I mostly morn other peoples sin or do I morn my sin and put it to death, by the Holy Spirt.
What dose it mean for me that God, in Jesus was run trough?
What does it mean that God provides a fountain of cleansing, in Christ Jesus?
The God of heaven and earth, the creator, the intimate God 3-1, in the Godhead council, plans out this redemption salvation, plan, were God pays the prize, for the sin and uncleanliness, of the people that will repent and believe. God sends the spirt, God provides the offering, the cleansing fountain, how great a salvation, how great and awesome is God? As Jesus said who would lay down his life for a rebel idol worshiper, glory stealer, or what ever you are or were…. And offer and suffer, endure pain, shame guilt of the people, to cleans and restore to God… Jesus… What is my response? Thankfulness, joy, to sing praises, to by the Holy Spirt live like I was loved by God, to show others that light.
Come to the fountain, - Come to Jesus, as we see John write Jesus will come back, with pierced hands and feet and all will see, as they all fall to their knees, let be a people that will worship, and praise Jesus, and not fall down in fear, and shame, because we did not come to the fountain, to be cleansed from sin and uncleanness, and get the clothe of Jesus works and righteousness.
